The Alli craze is in full-effect because it’s the first over-the-counter diet drug that is FDA-approved. But for many who have been taking the drug for weight loss have given a prevailing recommendation and that is to “wear dark pants”.

What many Alli users are learning is that by straying away from a low-fat diet, one can have leakage problems (aka Steatorrhea) due to the drug effectively blocking dietary fat from being absorbed and thus fat is excreted and unchanged when a person excretes feces.

But what is Alli? Alli is essentially Orlistat created by the company GlaxoSmithKline and is known as tetrahydrolipstatin, a drug used to treat people who are obese. The diet pill prevents the absorption of fat from the human diet and also reduces caloric intake. Read the rest of this entry »

The popular Atkins Diet was created by Dr. Robert Atkins back in the early 70′s and around 2003, the diet became so widely popular that many people, many restaurants and many companies started to offer menus that were low in carbs. In fact, it is estimated that nearly 25 million Americans are on a low carb diet during any given period.

There are many diets which focus on metabolic theories and the Atkins Diet believes that obesity is caused by refined carbohydrates such as sugar, flour and high-fructose corn syrup. The second is due to saturated fat and trans fats.

But of course, the diet is not exactly the easiest as the normal consumption of carbohydrates is around 180-300 grams. With the first phase of the Atkins Diet, people must restrict the carbohydrate intake to 20 grams and the selection of foods that can be eaten in the first two weeks alone may deter quite a bit of people.

For the Atkins Diet, there are a total of four phases.

High Protein and No Carb Diet

Posted by Rebecca Garcia
Rebecca Garcia

With the popularity of protein and low carb diets, there seems to be a thought by many people attempting diets that if carbohydrate is to be kept low, then why not cut carbs out of a diet completely.

Well, first let’s correct a few things. There is no such thing as a “no-carb diet”. In today’s modern society, it’s very difficult to not eat food that does not have carbs although there are some tribes that primarily eat seal and whales that primarily eat protein and fat but for those who eat foods that are derived from plants, these have carbohydrates. They may be low in carbohydrates but definitely not zero carbs.

Usually when people talk about no carb diets, they are typically referring to low carb diets such as the first phase (Induction) of the Atkins Diet which only last two weeks. But even with Atkins Diet or other low carb diets, they are low in carbohydrates, there are still carbohydrates in the foods you eat but by no means are they devoid of carbs.

A lot of people often wonder among the many diets out there, if having a diet high in fiber and low in carbs can be effective in weight loss or a healthy life.

What we do know is that fiber is good for you. Eating foods with low carb is good for you. But there is a misconception that eating foods with reduced carbs are also low in fiber. But the truth is that many people are lacking in their fiber intake.

Carbs plays an important part in our body since it is what is digested and converted and becomes the fuel in our body. Of course, you don’t want to eat high carb foods but enough to maintain your weight or lose weight. Too many carbs consumed for a long period of time can lead to type 2 diabetes.

So, many people have chosen a high fiber, low carb diet by eating foods such as vegetables, oat meal, oat bran and fruits.

What is Fiber?

Fiber is a part of food within plants that are indigestible by humans. It passes through our digestive systems and are not broken down but it is absorbed in our bloodstreams. Fiber is beneficial to people because it prevents constipation and helps make people more regular. But they are also important in low carb diets, especially foods that are low in the glycemic index. It is known that a high fiber diet is associated with lower risks of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and diverticular disease.
