Green Tea and Weight Loss Information
Posted by Richard Gonzales
Tea has been used in medicinal purposes in Asia for centuries and recent studies are showing that green tea are good for a variety of ailments such as diabetes but many studies are looking towards the effect of green tea and weight loss.
But what about weight loss?
Studies in Japan have shown that an average person that drink five cups of green tea a day can burn an extra 70-80 calories through thermogenesis (the process of heat production in organisms).
In fact, research done in 2008 have shown that in lab test mice, those who drank green tea have shown that mice with an obesity gene that ate food with green tea extract gained less weight and less fat. Also, there were less signs of fat in the liver for these mice. Another point found in this research is that these mice shown lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
But the weight loss is not significant as if one who would change their nutritional needs and ate healthy and practice daily exercise.
What research has shown from Green Tea
Research has shown the following from studies:
Increase in Metabolism
A study reported on the American Journal of Nutrition has found that green tea extract resulted in significant increase in energy expenditure. And that metabolic rate has increased by 4%.
Inhibits Fat Absorption and Helps Glucose Regulation
Experts have found that catechins in green tea have helped inhibit the movement of glucose into fat cells. The USDA reported that the green tea catechin epigallocatechin gallate (also known as EGCG) can enhance the action of insulin in the body and thus inhibiting the liver’s production of glucose and lowering blood sugar.
Green Tea can Help Reduce Appetite
Scientists at the University of Chicago found that green tea cause rats to lose up to 21 percent of their body weight and they consumed up to 60% less food after seven days of daily injections.
So, does green tea lead to weight loss?
The answer is yes but not significantly. Research done on people who drunk five cups of green tea per day for 43 straight days have lost about a pound. Over a period of a year, 8 pounds. So, there is a correlation of weight loss via green tea. But not significant weight loss.
One can not expect to eat a lot of food daily and by drinking green tea, they will lose all the calories they ate that date. Losing calories comes with proper nutrition, moderation and exercise.
Also, it is important to know that green tea is loaded with caffeine. So, if you are sensitive to caffeine, you may want to get decaffeinated green tea, especially if you have health problems, heart troubles or high blood pressure.
The most important thing to remember is that if you want results, you can’t depend on a pill or a drink to rapidly lead to significant weight loss. It takes time and it takes an adjustment to ones life, the foods they consume and practicing moderation and also daily exercise.
As a complement to one’s nutritional needs though, green tea is perfect.
